Northbound

Seven days around Svalbard on a twelve-cabin ship, in the season when the sun does not set.

Follow the route

  1. Day 1

    Longyearbyen

    Fly in, board the Polarstjerna, and sail out of Adventfjorden after dinner under the midnight sun.

  2. Day 2

    Isfjorden

    The widest fjord on the island. Landings on the tundra, and walrus hauled out at Kapp Thordsen.

  3. Day 3

    Ny-Ålesund

    The northernmost settlement, a research town of thirty people. The airship mast Amundsen left in 1926.

  4. Day 4

    Magdalenefjorden

    Glaciers calving straight into the sea. We launch the zodiacs to get close, but not too close.

  5. Day 5

    Moffen and the ice edge

    At 80° north the sea freezes. We follow the edge of the pack ice, looking for polar bears.

  6. Day 6

    Hinlopen Strait

    Bird cliffs of a hundred thousand guillemots, and the chance of blue whales in the open water.

  7. Day 7

    Back to Longyearbyen

    The last landing at a trapper's hut, then south overnight to the harbour you left.
